ATLANTA, GA — CNN Travel has released its 2026 list of America’s Best Towns to Visit, spotlighting 10 U.S. communities chosen for their attractions, food and drink, culture, nightlife, identity and ease of travel.
The editors say the list leans beyond the country’s biggest tourism draws and focuses instead on places with strong local character, interesting histories and a clear “wow factor.”
How CNN chose the 10 towns
For the third annual ranking, editors gathered nominations from readers and staff, then narrowed the field by weighing several practical and experiential factors.
Those included lodging, how easy each town is to reach, and whether the destination offers a mix of dining, beverage options, culture, nightlife and nearby activities that make it worth a longer look.
Outdoor access and downtown growth shape several picks
Roanoke, Virginia, stood out for hiking access, its walkable downtown and a growing food scene. CNN said the town sits near the Appalachian Trail and Blue Ridge Parkway and also reflects a strong railroad past.
Fort Collins, Colorado, earned praise for its historic downtown, drinks, nightlife and nearby mountain scenery, while Greenville, South Carolina, was highlighted for Falls Park, its urban waterfall and an extensive pedestrian and bike trail system.
Libraries, breweries and local history help define the Midwest and Northeast
Lawrence, Kansas, was recognized for its shopping, nightlife and defiant history, with Massachusetts Street singled out as a center of local character and independent businesses.
Iowa City, Iowa, was described as a literary hub with a lively downtown and cultural depth, while New Haven, Connecticut, was praised for Yale University, its museums, restaurants, music and theater, along with its historic pizza tradition and other classic food claims.
Sarasota leads the list with beaches, arts and a strong visitor draw
Sarasota, Florida, took the No. 1 spot on CNN’s list. The city was recognized for its beaches, gardens and arts scene, including a cultural complex tied to circus magnate fortunes and other performing and visual arts attractions.
Other towns on the 2026 list include Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; Burlington, Vermont; and Juneau, Alaska, which CNN said stands out for its wilderness, wildlife, seafood and unusual Alaskan setting.
