India travel news – Guwahati to resume international flight services with Druk Air, first since the pandemic

Guwahati to resume international flight

Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport will resume international passenger flight services from September 3, 2022, for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. Bhutan’s national airline, Druk Air, will resume its services to Guwahati, providing northeast India international connectivity with Paro and Singapore. Bhutan’s Druk Air is the only international carrier which operates flights to Guwahati, the gateway to northeast India.

Under India’s international Udaan scheme, Assam is in line to get connectivity with five more international destinations.

For more than two years, Druk Air’s services were kept on hold due to the pandemic. Bhutan recently opened its international borders to visitors and now, with Druk Air resuming flight services to and from Guwahati, more travellers from the east and northeast India will be able to fly to Paro directly instead of taking the long road to Bhutan.

Druk Air also connects Guwahati to Singapore’s Changi Airport.

Druk Air will operate two days a week from Guwahati. The aircraft, Airbus-319 has over 100-seat capacity. Its first flight from Guwahati since the pandemic, will be to Singapore’s Changi Airport.

This development looks very promising for Assam and northeast India as a whole because this means there is a possibility of more air connectivity to the ASEAN countries.

The Assam government is working towards five more international flight routes, including neighbouring countries like Myanmar, Nepal and Bangladesh.

As of now, there are only two international airports in the whole of northeast India, and they serve eight states – Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. After Assam and Manipur, West Bengal is the next best route for most travellers from northeast India.
