Jeju Island in Korea is expected to charge more than 6 USD per day

Jeju Island

The Jeju island government is considering applying a fee to the island for each tourist, priced at 6.2 USD per day.

The toll scheme has been reviewed since residents expressed concern about the consequences of a tourism boom that has made water and waste treatment problems increasingly beyond the island’s ability to manage. Proceeds will be used to support environmental sustainability, SCMP reported on April 23.

The plan is expected to be completed by August to submit to the National Assembly. If approved, each visitor to Jeju Island will have to pay an average tourist fee of 8,170 won ($6.2) a day. This amount includes 1,500 won per night accommodation fee. Guests renting a 4-seater car will have to pay an additional 5,000 won per day, minivan is 10,000 won.

The island government is expected to collect 141 billion won (more than 105 million USD) in the first year. The second year could be 167 billion won (over 125 million USD). In 2012, Jeju proposed to charge visitors but faced many objections. In August 2022, Jeju asked the Korea Environment Institute to study the feasibility of this work for early implementation.
