WASHINGTON, DC — Families planning a summer trip in 2026 have plenty of lower-cost options across the U.S. and nearby destinations, where free attractions, modest lodging and outdoor activities can help keep costs down.
The list ranges from beach towns and historic cities to national parks and family entertainment hubs, with value coming from a mix of no-cost experiences and reasonably priced places to stay.
Texas and Gulf Coast destinations offer low-cost beach trips
South Padre Island, Texas, stands out for free beach access, low-cost attractions and moderate summer hotel rates. Travelers can also use the Sandcastle Trail, the Laguna Madre Nature Trail and Port Isabel Lighthouse without spending much.
Gulf Shores, Alabama, is another budget-friendly beach option, helped by lower living costs and affordable rentals. Families can bike or hike in Gulf State Park, spend on inexpensive beach days and look for lodging with kitchen facilities to cut food expenses.
Historic cities can still fit a family budget
Williamsburg, Virginia, gives families a mix of education and entertainment, including Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown Settlement and Busch Gardens. Budget hotels and vacation rentals outside the historic district are presented as the better-value choice.
Washington, D.C., also ranks as a strong value because many of its biggest attractions are free. Smithsonian museums, the National Zoo and the monuments on the National Mall can fill several days without heavy admission costs.
Mountain, lake and theme-park trips keep entertainment costs in check
Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, Tennessee, combine access to Great Smoky Mountains National Park with paid attractions such as Dollywood and family shows. Cabins are highlighted as a good-value option for larger groups.
Branson, Missouri, offers budget-friendly entertainment around Silver Dollar City, live shows and Table Rock Lake, while family resorts and affordable hotels are widely available.
North American and Caribbean picks round out the list
Outer Banks, North Carolina, can work well for larger families sharing a vacation home, with free beach time, lighthouses and Corolla’s wild horses among the biggest draws.
The list also includes Banff National Park in Alberta for low-cost hiking, canoeing and wildlife viewing, plus San Juan, Puerto Rico, where U.S. travelers do not need a passport and can find lower daily costs than in many Caribbean destinations.
