Discovering the Elusive Kaibab Squirrel: A Rare Encounter in the Grand Canyon’s North Rim

Kaibab Squirrel

Among the many wonders that grace the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, a hidden gem awaits those with a keen eye and a dash of luck – the rare Kaibab Squirrel. This elusive creature, found solely on the Kaibab plateau, is one of the rarest mammals within the national park system, making it a coveted sight for wildlife enthusiasts and nature photographers alike.

Distinctive in its appearance, the Kaibab squirrel boasts a chestnut brown back, a white tail, and tufted ears. Its belly is predominantly black, occasionally gray, and its tufts grow longer with age, reaching up to 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5.1 cm) above the ears during the winter months, becoming less visible in the summer. This unique combination of features sets the Kaibab squirrel apart, making it a true treasure of the region.

For me, encountering the Kaibab squirrel became a mission on my epic road trip, which I affectionately referred to as my “photo-cation.” Excitement filled my heart as I stopped by the Visitor Center in Jacob Lake, eager to inquire about the whereabouts of these elusive creatures. However, the staff initially greeted my request with a chuckle, cautioning me about the difficulty of finding and photographing the Kaibab squirrel due to their incredible speed.

Disappointment threatened to dampen my spirits, and I began to wonder if my detour to the area would be in vain. But, with a glimmer of hope, I engaged in further conversation with the park staff, who shared a location where sightings had been reported. Fueled by the prospect of catching a glimpse of this ultra-rare squirrel, I set off, determined to find and photograph them.

As I arrived in the suggested area, a sense of anticipation filled the air. To my astonishment, as if orchestrated by destiny, a Kaibab squirrel darted across the dirt road right in front of my vehicle, followed by two companions. Time seemed to slow down as I absorbed the sight before me – these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat, frolicking and exploring with an energy that captured the essence of wild freedom.

With my camera in hand, I eagerly observed and photographed the Kaibab squirrels, trying to capture their essence and preserve the magic of the moment. The encounter felt like a precious gift, an experience that surpassed my wildest expectations. As I clicked away, the squirrels danced in and out of view, reminding me of the fragility and preciousness of these encounters with nature’s wonders.

Knowing that they are native to no other part of the world, their presence on the Kaibab plateau becomes all the more special. Reflecting on my adventure, I am grateful for the knowledge and assistance provided by the Visitor Center staff, who guided me to this unforgettable experience. The encounter with the Kaibab squirrels not only filled my heart with joy but also left me with a profound sense of appreciation for the diversity and resilience of life in our natural world.
