As per reports, Thai lawmakers submitted a report to the Parliament, recommending permission to “entertainment complexes” with legal casinos to be built in all prime Thai cities. This is seen as a bid to revive Thailand’s tourism industry, which has a significant role to play in boosting the country’s economy.
After going through a tough pandemic phase, Thailand is taking all the required measures to lure tourists and foreign currency. Recently, the country was in news for decriminalising cannabis and is now set to open casinos to rescue its economy.
As per reports, Thai lawmakers submitted a report to the Parliament, recommending permission to “entertainment complexes” with legal casinos to be built in all prime Thai cities. This is seen as a bid to revive Thailand’s tourism industry, which has a significant role to play in boosting the country’s economy.
Pichet Chuamuangphan, Vice Chairman of the panel, said, “We’re focused on attracting foreigners to step up tourism and draw more money out of their pockets. This will also stem the outflow of money from Thai gamblers and help the government collect hefty taxes for our economic security.”
Pichet further said that Greater Bangkok would be the perfect place for the initial casino. Later, casinos can operate in southern provinces like Phuket, Krabi or Phang Nga. Popular tourist places like Chiang Mai and Chonburi are also the contenders.
Talking about money, he said that these facilities, when operational, will generate at least 400 billion baht ($11 billion) in additional tax revenue annually.
For those who don’t know, Thailand has become the first Asian nation to decriminalise cannabis. Not only this, it has also become the first country in Southeast Asia to move toward legalising same-sex unions.
