Brighton is arguably one of the most fun places to visit in the UK, with its buzzing alternative lifestyle and amazing nightlife! Don’t forget to go shopping in the lanes or having fish and chips on the pier when you visit.

Nearby you have the Seven Sisters cliffs too so if you’re on a UK road trip or fancy multiple locations, be sure to check it out.

What makes Brighton one of the most photographed places in the UK is the colour within the city. Colour is more powerful than we think, it can affect our mood and change our perspectives. Where is Brighton?

Brighton is a seaside resort situated on the South Coast of England. It’s in the county of East Sussex, and about 1hr from London by train, 3 hours from Bristol, 2.5 hours from Bournemouth, or 4.5 hours from Leeds.

How to get to Brighton…

Brighton is well linked to London and the South East of England by train. Alternatively, you can drive, but parking once you’re there can be tricky.

Once you’re in Brighton itself, everything is within easy walking distance so you won’t need a car to get around.

If you’re in a hotel, AirBnb or staying at a friends, be sure to check the parking situation and whether you have a space allocated. Otherwise it’s a little like London: tricky or expensive. Parking can cost up to £20 a day, which can be a bulky expense on top of your trip.

The train station is right in the centre and walking distance from the centre and the beach front. A great option to avoid car hassle, and more environmentally friendly too!

If you’re coming from further afield, it’s easiest to fly into London Gatwick. But, you can get to Brighton from most London airports and from Southampton Airport fairly easily by public transport.

Let’s see the best things to do in Brighton, England 2022

1. Go shopping on the colourful Dukes Lane.

Take a wander down Dukes Lane, you will find this serene spot nestled in the heart of Brighton, just a stone’s throw away from the seafront. The hidden gem is not only ideal for supporting independent retail stores and cafes, but it’s also home to some unmissable colour popping art and storefronts, making it one of the most colourful streets in Brighton and one of the most instagrammable spots in Brighton.

One of the best things to do in Brighton is to get a photograph next to the iconic ‘We’re All Brighton Lovers’ street art mural and find the popular They Made This shop to browse contemporary modern art prints. You could spend an hour or so roaming this tranquil winding courtyard.

2. Trek up Albion Hill.

One of the best things to do in Brighton is to take a walk out of the centre to have a break from the hustle and bustle. Head towards London Road and the Level Park. You will find the longest colourful street in Brighton located on a hill called Albion Hill. It’s best to admire the houses from the top where you also get a pretty good view over some of Brighton as well!

Albion Hill is located in an area called Hanover, and here you can find more Instagrammable spots in Brighton such as street art on people’s houses. A bright pink Greta Thunberg is just a few streets up from Albion Hill; if you are an extinction rebellion fan keep an eye out for more green-peace style art around the city. After all, Brighton is all about promoting the values of the Green Party.

3. Visit Gardner Street in the famous North Laine.

Tourists from all over the world visit Brighton, for the beach, the nightlife and the famous North Laine. If you want colour, the North Laine is where you will experience the spirited atmosphere and Brighton vibes and visiting is definitely one of the best things to do in Brighton.

People watching, sipping coffee, browsing independent shops and spotting street art in Brighton are among some of the best things to do in this area. It isn’t far to walk from Brighton seafront, and is only a 5-minute walk to Brighton train station. If you are coming from the station, look out for the iconic mural on the side of The Prince Albert Pub on your way; it’s the largest colourful mural in the city. You will also find the original Banksy Kissing Coppers on this wall, a well-known piece of art, and one of the best things on one of the most colourful streets in Brighton.

In the North Laine you will also find GAK, a hard to miss music store with bright red and yellow striped exterior and walls filled with artworks of iconic musicians, such as John Lennon and Robert Smith. All around this area you will find expressive art, and this is the one place you can’t visit Brighton without seeing.

4. Take a stroll down Trafalgar Lane for unmissable street art in Brighton.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll be on the hunt for street art in every new city you visit. One of my favourite streets to photograph in Brighton is the hidden Trafalgar Lane. It’s lined with graffiti and art portraying significant messages. There is new graffiti popping up regularly from Brighton based artists and every time you walk down this street, you will spot something new. It’s worth taking a photo if you don’t visit Brighton often…your favourite piece of street art in Brighton might be gone next time you visit!

5. Head to Blaker Street at sunset.

If there was an award for the most colourful street in Brighton, Blaker Street would most likely win. It’s well worth the steep walk to the top of this street.

When you get there you will be greeted by a unique view of Brighton Palace Pier. You can’t beat looking down on one of Brighton’s most famous landmarks, especially with the striking rainbow coloured Blaker Street right in front of you.

Why not visit this street at golden hour? The sun slowly setting on the colourful houses makes for an excellent photo, especially with the sea as a backdrop. The ideal way to end a day of exploring a new city.

If you’re looking for street art in Brighton, don’t forget to look out for art by The Postman on this street. He’s a well-known street artist and you will find a house with one of his commissions above a window. Keep an eye out for more of his art when you’re exploring the city, he presents famous icons from the past and present, with a punk twist.
