The World’s Best Avocado Toast Can Be Found At Your Campsite

The world’s best avocado toast? Yeah, I said it.

In the last year, I’m almost 100 percent sure that no matter where you live, you have been in some type of food or coffee establishment which serves avocado toast, charging you $12 for a slice of bread with some green stuff on it. It’s the darling of the morning Instagram crowd, ready to be photographed, decked out in glorious bright green. Truth be told, nothing makes me roll my eyes roll more than avocado toast. The only problem is, I like avocado toast. I really like it.

Fortunately for outdoor lovers, while avocado toast certainly does not win in the originality category – these days, practically every coffee shop with a pourover has one on the menu – this simple dish does win in deliciousness, and that’s what makes it the perfect camping breakfast. On the internet we may have reached peak avocado toast, but hey this isn’t a website about spending more time on the internet, it’s about getting outdoors, and when you’re outdoors and you’re sick of oatmeal, there just has to be another option

While avocados are slightly on the fragile side – carelessly tossing it in a bag will get you nowhere, fast – they are perfectly positioned to be turned into a backcountry delicacy. The kind of ingredient that when you use it makes your adventure partners go, “holy shit this is amazing.” Housed in its own thick skin, you don’t need to wrap an avocado in anything to take it on trail, and if you’re good about getting a ripe one (or one that will ripen in a couple of days when you want to eat it) it can easily be spread on just about anything. Pro tip: they also fit perfectly in bike jersey pockets.

The trick to avocado toast, however – and not just any avocado toast, I’m talking Killer Avocado Toast – is not just to take a slice of bread and start spreading the fatty, green fruit on it with your Swiss Army knife. No, a good piece of avocado toast, one worthy of any $10 menu, takes a little bit of additional effort. But it’s effort that’s worth it.

Fortunately, that extra effort can be done in about the same time that it takes your morning coffee to brew. Since your camp stove is already in full action after boiling water, all you have to do is grill a few slices of bread in it, then rub them down with garlic cloves.

After all, it’s the extra attention to detail that takes a camping meal from good to great. And it won’t cost you $12.
