In the future, Agartala’s Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport (MBB) will be operating flights to Bangkok through Guwahati, Chittagong, and Dhaka, Bangladesh. The Airport Authorities recently informed this of India (AAI).
Located 20km north of Tripura, Agartala airport is the second busiest airport in the northeastern region of India.
This means the MBB airport third international airport in the northeast after the Guwahati airport in Assam and Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal, Manipur.
Inaugurated on January 04 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the airport received its first flight from Kolkata, with 143 people on the board.
The airport saw the commissioning of a new terminal building where a function was held, including the famous Hojagiri tribal folk dance staged by tribal women.
The new terminal building is being said that it is the best in northeast region with all modern amenities. The airport costs INR 500 crore, and the new terminal has been designed to hold 1500 passengers, with 200 international passengers at peak hours.
Earlier known as Singerbill Airport, this airport was renamed in 2018. The airport sees a massive footfall of tourists from Bangladesh.
“During the Second World War, King Bir Bikram supported and helped the Allied powers, especially Great Britain. He deployed a contingent of the Tripura Army to assist Great Britain. During that time, Agartala, Kailashahar, and other airports were built to facilitate the Allied powers.” Said a statement by Historian and Writer Pannalal Roy.
