Hong Kong is all set to shorten the COVID-19 hotel quarantine period for all arrivals to 3 days from 7 days, thereby taking another step to gradually unwind strict pandemic rules. Reportedly, the updated measure will come into force from Friday. This was recently announced by the city’s leader, John Lee, while he was attending a press conference. However, arrivals will be required to self monitor for a further four days, when they will not be allowed to enter premises such as restaurants and bars.
Lee further added that they need to balance between people’s livelihood and the competitiveness of Hong Kong to give the community maximum momentum and economic vitality.
Reports have it that people who are in quarantine will be issued a red code on a government mandated app, which will eventually change to a yellow code once they leave quarantine, which will signify that they may not be allowed to enter crowded premises.
Earlier, quarantine was continued for as long as three weeks, followed by all arrivals required to spend at least a week in hotel quarantine and comply with frequent testing orders, and fill out multiple forms.
As of now, only a select number of hotels are available for quarantine. Rooms of these hotels are costly and are typically booked out months in advance. The payment is made up front and refunds are not allowed unless there is a change in government policy or flight cancellation.
Since 2020, the city’s border has been sealed almost completely, with international arrivals facing stringent quarantine and testing protocols. It is still one of the places in the world that still imposes quarantines for arrivals.
