Travel news 2022 – Flights soon to six Southeast Asian countries from Guwahati Airport.

Under the International Udaan scheme, Guwahati to soon be connected to six Southeast Asian countries which include Kathmandu, Dhaka, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Yangon, and Malaysia.

Currently, there are no flights from the Northeastern States to international destinations. The State Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said that Guwahati is to be connected to international destinations which include 6 SE Asian countries.

He further mentioned that the government has given a commitment of INR 100 crores to the centre for visibility gap funding. Bidding operations have already begun where the state government has already released INR 10.9 crores. The flights will be started when international air connectivity fully resumes. 

The first flight from Guwahati to Dhaka was started on July 01, 2019, under the International Udaan scheme. However, due to a lack of passengers, the operation was put on hold.

Furthermore, Guwahati to Bangkok flights was also cancelled due to adequate passengers in January 2020 which came as a major setback to the government plan to transform the city into a travel hub.

Reportedly, the last international commercial flight that operated through the Northeast was for Paro-Guwahati-Singapore, which was also suspended last year amid the COVID scare.

As per the resources, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) of NE Headquarters is now waiting for the flight schedule and intimation regarding the commencement date of international flights.
